UPFRONT connections By Sean Lyons Par for the cause Popular summer activity helps New North charities thrive 20 | Insight • J u l y 2 013 c ourt e s y of F V T C S ome people golf for fun, some golf as a way to conduct business meetings with clients. But it's also is a way to raise money for charitable causes throughout the New North. For example, Fox Valley Technical College hosts a charity golf outing each year to raise scholarship funds for students. This year marks FVTC's 24th year of doing so. Since 1989, FVTC's golf outing proceeds have provided more than 800 scholarships totaling more than $500,000. The outings have proven to be a fun way that members of the community and companies can give back, through buying tickets or through corporate sponsorships. "Last year, we netted over $100,000 as a result of our two golf outings," says Alyce Dumke, executive director of Foundation and Community Relations for Fox Valley Technical College. Despite the impressive draw from last year's two outings, FVTC plans on only hosting one golf outing this year. "From 1989 until 2002, we held one golf outing," says Dumke. "Because there was so much interest, we planned and delivered two golf outings from 2003 to 2012. While we were able to accommodate large numbers of friends and partners, the Foundation team took a hard look at the human resource investment of each outing, and this Golfers get ready to hit the green at a FVTC charity golf event. The college uses the event to raise scholarship money for students. year, made the difficult decision to return to one event." Dumke says the Foundation expects to surpass the course's 152-person limit and a waiting list is likely. "While we made the change to one golf outing this year, our fundraising goal has not changed," she says. "Our objective is to generate $100,000 for scholarships for Fox Valley Technical College students." The outing will feature a scramble format, in which participants can anticipate fun contests on the green. "As one of our sponsors said, 'This is not really about golf at all; it's about meeting the needs of FVTC students and making a difference in their lives,'" Dumke says.
