"The process used
is based on the
VirtualPaint®
software and
technology developed
by the Iowa Waste
Reduction Center, a
division of the University of Northern
Iowa in conjunction with Southwest
Research Institute."

for workforce solutions
LTC works with clients to
customize the training based on
their specific needs, Abts says. While
interested parties can come
to the campus for instruction, it's not
uncommon for instructors to take
the simulator to customer sites,
where instructors Pete Gall and Jack
Charles lead students (employees)
through the process.
Gall, a semi-retired adjunct staff
instructor with 30 years of experience,
is able to devote more time to the
project, but Charles, who heads
the college's Auto Collision program,
is also an expert in the process.
According to the description on
the Iowa Waste Reduction Center
website (www.iwrc.org), the system
lets users view and interact with
spray application equipment while
simulating actual application to
a virtual surface. Instantaneous
feedback shows spray pattern
distribution, film thickness, transfer
efficiency and overspray in real time.
The computer and tracking system
communicate to a projector to display
a VirtualPaint canvas on a portable
rear projection screen.
Students can adjust air pressure,
fan size, fluid pressure, flow rate
and partial triggering on a spray
gun. Feedback to the painter is
important, an improvement over
past training methods, which
involved expensive materials and
