Another user of the program is Oshkosh Corporation – Defense. Greg Bossert, a training specialist with the company's employee development center, says the program is a valuable training tool. It's relevant to what people are doing, he says, particularly with hands-on training where employees don't have to wear protective suits or have any constraints. "It's the habit of using good habits," he says, describing the process. "It's good for some of the veterans (employees) to get the feel and learn new ways. Everyone learns differently, and we are making very positive strides." Having purchased its own system, the company trained all hourly employees and front-line supervisors involved in spray painting. Some 200 people learned the process. With so many technical skills throughout industry, an employee often doesn't have a chance to learn proper techniques until he or she starts working, Bossert says. A huge plus for Oshkosh was the computer data showing the cost of paint wasted because of overspray. The company, which purchases millions of dollars in paint products, can adapt this type of training for other business units as well. Gall developed the customized incremental 80-hour training program. After training is completed, there is an evaluation period in which he has a conversation with each individual student. "Everyone has to learn," he says, "so why not train in a way that shows the efficiencies of painting without costing the company a bad product?" F You Deserve Experts. We Have Them.
