on the web www.bassettmechanical.com have a very humble workforce that takes pride in their work but aren���t as comfortable sharing our success stories, so coming up with good content is a challenge. Also, some of the work that we do may be impressive or interesting to others, but it is work we do on a daily basis so often we have a hard time seeing the story behind the work. We also have an internal roadblock: A good portion of our workforce doesn���t use social media on a personal level, so some education is needed on how it works, how it can benefit them personally and how it can benefit the company as well. There���s a general feeling that social media is just a bunch of noise with little substance. Social media can be intimidating for users that aren���t familiar with it, so we need to show how this is just another way to communicate with people. Our employees are great at communicating with customers and vendors face to face and over the phone; they just need to see how this can be done through social media too. Wins along the way Social media allows us to showcase the culture and people that make up Bassett Mechanical in ways that were very difficult before. This is a great way for customers, vendors and prospective employees to find out who we truly are. Community involvement is a big part of our culture so we like to share photos and information about community events like Rebuilding Together and the Salvation Army Red Kettle Drive, not only to illustrate our involvement in improving our community, but also to increase awareness for the needs of the community. We used Facebook to recognize winners of individual awards such as the Future 15 and the Manufacturing All-Stars. In addition to posting job openings, we also share helpful information that we find to help job seekers in their search. We use Twitter to share industry news and to connect with others in our industry, as well as to connect with supporting area institutions like Insight Publications and the New North, Inc. ductwork fabrications and are blown away when they visit our facility and see the size of many of the projects in our shop. YouTube videos will be able to help users get a grasp of the size of the fabrications while also introduce the people who made it all come together. Once this is in place, educating our employees on how to use it in creating dialogue with their contacts will be key. I think at the end of the day our assumption will be correct: There really was something to this social media thing. Jason Raisleger is a marketing coordinator at Bassett Mechanical. I believe there is a great opportunity, especially through YouTube, to educate people about our capabilities.
