Johnson Senior Associate Editor CLARIFICATION: In our October cover story about Holy Family Memorial, Manitowoc, it was stated that "from 2001 to 2012, hospital charges in Manitowoc County were 34 percent lower than in Outagamie County and 97 percent lower than in neighboring Brown County." The data source of this information was inadvertently not cited within the article. (A reader contacted Insight to question the wide discrepancies.) According to Mark Herzog, president and CEO of Holy Family, the intent of the comparison was to demonstrate how expensive hospital resources are being used in each county. The data used is hospital information that is reported to the State of Wisconsin by all hospital and ambulatory surgical centers. Reporting is mandatory and collected by the Wisconsin Hospital Association. After validation by the WHA, the data is made available to all health care systems choosing to access it. The comparison cited in the article evaluated the total annual gross patient charges for inpatient and outpatient hospital procedures for all residents living within the zip codes of each county, regardless of where services were performed. The data covered the period of January 2001 to December 2011 and was adjusted for population changes. Annual total charges were evaluated for the 10-year period to determine the overall rate of increase by county. Counties were then compared, resulting in the reported data.
