The littoral combat ship is capable of speeds of more than 40 knots. December saw the launch of the newest naval littoral combat ship from the Marinette Marine Corp. shipyard, the USS Milwaukee (LCS 5), the fifth ship to be named after Wisconsin's largest city. "Milwaukee's christening serves as a tribute to this great American city, but also to the hard-working people of Wisconsin and our nation's entire industrial base," says Ray Mabus, Secretary of the Navy. "LCS is one of our most important platforms and represents the future of the Navy." The ship is 388 feet long and can churn almost half a million gallons of seawater each minute with its four axial-flow water-jet engines, allowing the ship to travel at speeds greater than 40 knots. The four USS Milwaukees that preceded this ship varied in service. The first was a Civil War ironclad river monitor, the second was a St. Louis-class cruise liner, the third was an Omaha-class light cruiser, and the fourth was a Wichita-class replenishment oiler. The video of the ship's launch is available at www.youtube.com.
