By the Numbers The 2013 third quarter Pricewaterhouse Coopers Manufacturing Barometer reported a steady growth of merger and acquisition (M&A) activity for the Global Industrial Products sector (IP). The IP industry recorded 169 transactions exceeding $50 million for a total of $65.7 billion – a growth of $12.4 billion from the second quarter total of $53.3 billion. The industrial manufacturing sector claimed the highest transactions value, reporting $29.4 billion, up from $12.7 billion in the second quarter. Industrial products companies are focusing on local market deals, reporting 107 worth greater than $50 million. Seventy-five percent of aerospace and defense sector transactions and 72 percent of transportation and logistics transactions were local deals. Asia and Oceania represented nearly half of all global IP deal activity. Manufacturing in the future • Since February 2010, the U.S. has added 554,000 manufacturing jobs. The industry needs to add 1.7 million jobs to return to pre-recession levels. • The U.S. has reached a pre-recession-level in exports, which has risen 38 percent since 2009. Exports are responsible for about 3 million U.S. jobs. • 83 percent of manufacturers reported moderate to severe skilled worker shortages in a recent study. About 600,000 highskilled manufacturing jobs remained unfilled nationwide. In 2012, 54 percent of businesses reported increased profitability. Of manufacturing businesses, 36 percent reported increased profitability in 2013, down from 57 percent in 2012. 77 percent of businesses project generally better performance in 2014. • 63 percent of manufacturing businesses reported increased wages for 2013, lower than 79 percent in 2012. • 31 percent of Northeast Wisconsin manufacturers reported an increase in the number of employees for 2013. 51 percent reported an unchanged number of employees. 33 percent of Northeast Wisconsin manufacturers project an increase in the number of employees for 2014, while 66 percent expect their number of employees to remain the same.
