Hughes says two obstacles remain:
finding clinical placements and faculty.
"There is a huge nurse educator
shortage," she says. "I think we could
easily take in more students but we
wouldn't be able to service them
without the qualified faculty."
Studies show many nurses are
getting ready to retire, making it urgent
to find more nurses as well as the
faculty and programs to train them.
"The problem is we don't have the
pipeline coming as we have had in the
past," Kaul says.
Reilly agreed, noting there is also
a decline in the number of people
entering the nursing field.
"All these indications lead to the
need for more nursing educational
opportunities, seamless progression
through academic nursing degrees, and
encouragement of young people to join
the nursing profession," Reilly says.
