Through the reuse of the sand and slag byproduct, almost 200,000 cubic yards of waste material that would have been destined for the landfill have been eliminated. Foundry officials anticipate construction of the new liner barrier layer system in 2016. Waupaca Foundry has worked on ways to reuse its sand byproduct for more than two decades, says Bryant Esch, Waupaca Foundry environmental coordinator. "A continuous improvement goal has been to identify and facilitate increasingly value-added uses for these materials," Esch says. "Waupaca recognized the potential of spent foundry sands as a native clay replacement for low permeability barrier construction projects." U.S. GAIN ANNOUNCES AGREEMENT WITH UNILEVER U.S. Gain, the compressed natural gas division of Appleton-based U.S. Venture, has partnered with Unilever to build a GAIN Clean Fueling CNG fueling station in Edwardsville, Ill. The station will be the largest GAIN Clean Fuel station U.S. Gain has built to date. "This partnership establishes a relationship between GAIN Clean Fuel and Unilever, one of the top consumer packaged goods companies in the world," says Bill Renz, general manager for U.S. Gain. "We're excited to be helping such a recognizable brand achieve its sustainability goals." The agreement calls for Unilever to purchase 800,000 gallons of GAIN Clean Fuel CNG per year. CNG produces less emissions than its diesel fuel equivalent. It also provides a cost savings when compared with diesel fuel and is domestically produced, which insulates it from price volatility.
