It will work closely with media, policy makers, community groups, allied industries, environmental stakeholders and the public to highlight the positive attributes of marine transportation. e program will serve as a platform to discuss the economic, environmental and safety benefits of the shared waterway, says Mark W. Barker, chairman of the partnership's board of directors. "We anticipate the program will engage our stakeholders by providing them with industry news, results of reports and studies and opportunities for them to understand — in a very real way — the impact Great Lakes Seaway shipping has on the economies of both the U.S. and Canada," Barker says. A new website, www.greatlakesseaway.org, features sections dedicated to the program's three key messages — economy, environment and safety — as well as facts and figures about the eight Great Lakes states and two Canadian provinces. In other Port of Green Bay news, April figures showed a 67 percent increase in imports/exports compared with April 2014 numbers. e shipping season began 15 days earlier than in 2014, positively impacting tonnage. Year-to-date totals through May were 23 percent ahead of last year's pace, attributed to strong shipments of cement and coal as well as salt. "e port also saw a big increase in domestic exports of petroleum products such as diesel, gasoline and ethanol, which is a new occurrence for us," says Dean Haen, director for the Port of Green Bay. "is is exactly what the port PORT OF GREEN BAY JOINS BI-NATIONAL PUBLIC AFFAIRS PARTNERSHIP needs to meet or exceed 2014 tonnage numbers, which were our highest numbers since 2007." A total of 24 ships came through the port in May, the same number as in 2014. "It's still early and we are seeing a healthy amount of traffic, which means the demand for raw materials is strong," Haen says. "Transporting cargo through the port shows that using waterborne transportation continues to be a valuable asset to businesses."
