Trenergy says the boiler, which weighs more than 385,000 pounds (nearly 200 tons) is likely the heaviest the company has ever made. The boiler is nearly 30 feet tall, 23 feet wide and 40 feet long. The boiler will produce steam for process use and power generation at the mill. Its delivery is part of more than $80 million in sustainability investments at the 95-year-old Broadway Mill facility. "The new natural gas boiler will replace our largest coal-fired boiler, helping us reduce our air emissions, meet future regulations and modernize our assets," says Mike Kawleski, public affairs manager of Georgia-Pacific. Other recent sustainability work includes a new electrical substation and distribution lines, allowing the company to offset more coal power by purchasing electricity from Wisconsin Public Service, Kawleski says. More environmental controls are planned for the company's remaining coal- fired boilers. "All these improvements will allow our emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrous oxide to drop by 80 percent after the boiler becomes operational in mid-2015," Kawleski says.
