50th anniversary of the Wild River
designation.
Florence County has created a tour
with 15 access points to the Pine and
Popple rivers to increase access for
fishing, paddling or just admiring the
scenery, which ranges from meandering
flat water to rapids and waterfalls.
"It just seems that a lot of people
don't know why these rivers are
special," says Gehlhoff. "It's a great
opportunity to get people out there."

Knock on wood
Florence County officials observed
another anniversary when, earlier
this year, Pride Manufacturing Co.
celebrated 25 years since the company
expanded to Florence.
Pride Manufacturing makes wood
products that include golf tees, cigar
tips, wooden toy parts and pallet
boards. e company was founded in
1930 in Maine and made the expansion

into Florence because of its location
near wood resources including birch,
which is used to make golf tees.
e Florence plant employs 60
employees on three shis producing
golf tees and other golf tournament
related products.
