30 | /insight on manufacturing • July 2014 w w w.in s i g h t o n m f g . c o m PLANT|nEWs cont. aDuLt mentorship removes career barriers Fox Valley Technical College's Adult Basic Education program has spent the year piloting a new initiative in which 16 ABE students received enhanced mentorship from instructors and staff members through a "Removing Barriers" program. The students were referred through the ABE program to address "everyday barriers" to success including not having enough fuel to get to class, childcare emergency issues, dental care and access to equipment. As a result of the program, many students enrolled in classes toward a program or other career- related opportunity and gained employment. One student was the first to land a career out of FVTC's new Transport Trailer Service Technician program, even before he finished all the classes. Because of the program's success, the J. J. Keller Foundation renewed the grant for another year at FVTC. Fvtc hosts meDicaL exchange A delegation of Russian health care professionals visited Northeast Wisconsin for a week as part of a Congress-sponsored program to promote mutual understanding between Russian physicians and their Wisconsin counterparts. Hosted by Fox Valley Technical College's Global Education & Services department, the Open World delegates explored best practices in the delivery of medical and community-based healthcare services by interacting with local hospital physicians, primary care providers and related organizations.
