Miller Electric Mfg. Co. has joined with area employers, manufacturing alliances, technical colleges, workforce development boards and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Wisconsin to head the initiative, which seeks to train 120 qualified welders in the program's first 12 months. The initiative will produce accredited welders using a screening process and essential life skills training, in addition to traditional welding training and mentored trainee support. The more than $1 million committed so far to the HCCW Advanced Manufacturing Partnership's Hispanic Training Initiative includes $400,000 from the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development to fund customized technical skills development for trainees in the program's first year, with $100,000 going to each of the four regional sites. In addition, Illinois Tool Works Inc., the parent company of Miller, is providing $400,000 in matching funds to ensure a successful launch of the initiative, and the American Welding Society Foundation has committed $220,000 in grant funding. t he U.S. Navy has once again turned to Sentinel Structures, Inc. for help in restoring the USS Constitution. The historic ship, affectionately called "Old Ironsides," is located in Massachusetts at the Boston Navy Yard Historical Park. Launched in 1797, it is the oldest commissioned Navy vessel in the world. Peshtigo-based Sentinel Structures, Inc. recently shipped one full truckload of materials to Boston and another contract for replacement materials is in production. The company is manufacturing glued, laminated white oak hull planking and deck planking along with tightly curved breakwater knees. About 34,000 board feet of predominately heartwood white oak is being consumed at the Peshtigo laminating plant for the large timbers. In addition, 6,000 board feet of heartwood Douglas fir is being milled for berth deck planking. The Peshtigo laminating plant has been making engineered timbers for the restoration of the ship since the early 1960s. The USS Constitution recently sailed under its own power in 1997 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of its launch and again in 2012 to commemorate its famed defeat of HMS Guerriere during the War of 1812. It was during that battle in which the ship earned its nickname, as British cannon fire rebounded off the wooden hull. F sentineL structures keeps historic vesseL ship-shape
