Communication and culture can be another area of concern with multiple shis, particularly when a company uses a large percentage of contract employees. At Quality Packaging, inc., of fond du Lac, most of the second shi is populated by temporary employees hired through QPs employment group of Appleton and solucion, LLC, of huntersville, n.C., says Lynda Wills, vice president of training/development. "We always, even right from the orientation for our hourly employees, focus heavily on attendance and safety," Wills says. "ose are two topics that we talk about heavily. Because of the nature of the business, we need you to be here. And we're working really hard at creating an environment that everybody's comfortable in." A full-time manager for solucion has an office at QPi, which helps connect the two shis and build a cohesiveness between QPi employees and its contingent workforce. QPi, which has been working on company culture and wellness for several years, implemented a committee offering events like fantasy football or chair massages, in addition to other wellness and safety programs. While the programs mainly include QPi's full- time workers, solucion contributes to, and participates in, select activities such as company lunches and raffles. QPi also installed tV screens that display slide shows throughout the second shi so employees receive information from daytime meetings, and the information is supplemented by bulletin boards and activities, Wills says. trey Bitsche, solucion operating manager, says QPi incorporates solucion workers as much as possible into company activities. While solucion interacts with just a handful of QPi employees on the second shi, "they always try to make sure we stay on the same communication level as their employees are getting on a day- to-day basis."
