In terms of the efforts here in the New North, Ann Franz, director of NEWMA, can rattle off figures related to progress of the partnerships between manufacturers of all types, schools and instructors at all grade levels, and even interest from some state leaders. "In 2005, for example, there were 28 students in the Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC) welding program. NEWMA formed in 2006, and through its private-public partnerships, 109 enrolled in 2010, and we're up to 180 in the welding program right now," says Franz, who also is NWTC's strategic partnership manager. "We are solving this critical manufacturing job issue by exposing students, even in middle school, to the type of work available, then staying engaged with these future employees moving forward," Franz says. "It is also a legacy project as we aren't just in the workforce years down the road?'" Sachse says. But he's getting more questions about duplicating the results of NEWMA in other countries, including France and Argentina. He calls that a credit to the private- public partners in the New North that recognized a problem, then put trust in an alliance to actively solve it. "It is certainly not paralysis by analysis," Sachse says. "is is a passionate, full-steam-ahead group who is proud to be flipping the idea of what a partnership should look like on its head. And I think it's making others a little jealous, too." F The NEW Manufacturing Alliance is accepting nominations for the third annual Excellence in Manufacturing/K-12 Partnerships Awards. The awards dinner will be held on Oct. 21 at the KI Convention Center in Green Bay. Nominate schools, companies and individuals that are working together in the New North by June 13. Contact Ann Franz, director of the NEW Manufacturing Alliance at (920) 498-5587. Nominate a partner responding to the worry of today or tomorrow, but years down the road." And Sachse's study of NEWMA may be a stronger body of support for long-term planning than anyone first realized. He cites the interest of a fih- grader aer taking a plant tour, with both manufacturers and educators knowing it may be 20 years before the student's dream is realized. Still, the commitment to a partnership for helping get a person to that outcome is long term, and others are realizing it. Sachse just returned from Stockholm aer being added to a list of panelists at an OECD forum on job creation there, and was also asked to share the study at a second gathering in Paris in May. Both are happening ahead of the presentation he will give in June. e additional presentations provide an opportunity to answer skeptics.
