offsetting the cost of the participants' salary, including training needed for retirees to learn how to pass on their knowledge. Components of the initiative, anticipated to roll out by July, include: » ach company can determine the E specific occupational areas in which it wants to focus (office, production or management). » ach company will determine the E number of hours the retiree will work over the course of the training/ mentoring project. For example, one company may want the retiree to work a fixed 15 hours a week for six months, while at another company, the retiree's hours may taper off each successive month. » ach company will employ one E retiree for the pilot project. » e retiree will work with multiple Th people – any combination of new hires, incumbent workers being promoted into a new role and youth apprenticeship students. » etirees will serve as mentors, R developing other workers in areas such as company culture, soft skills, customer knowledge and other skills specific to the company. » ompanies can either bring back C a retiree that has left the company within the previous three years or target someone about to retire. However, the person must have worked for that specific company. » ach company will determine the E wage of its employees and retirees. » EDC will fund 25 percent of the W overall costs per company, which includes retiree wages, employees) wages and benefits, TWI (Training Within Industry) or "train the trainer" cost, and an aptitude assessment tool. This type of mentoring has been successful in the past. For example, the U.S. Department of Defense implemented TWI during World War II to quickly train millions of unskilled workers to build warships, planes and other military equipment and supplies. TWI was then used in post-war Japan to help rebuild a devastated industrial base. Closer to home, Ariens has credited TWI with bringing down turnover of its new hires by 50 percent. Clearly, there is a skilled worker shortage within our region in key manufacturing occupations that include machinists, industrial maintenance technicians, engineers, machine operators and electromechanical technicians. Manufacturers are going to need to invest in and grow individuals that may not have the ideal skill set and experience. The Retired Worker Initiative should contribute to creating and retaining a dynamic, skilled workforce that will sustain and grow the region's manufacturing base, today and into the future.
