When the fictional characters Marty McFly and Doc Brown traveled to the future in the 1989 hit movie Back to the Future Part II, they were amazed by what they witnessed – flying cars, fusion reactors, and self-fitting apparel. What would a human resources professional from the 1980s think of the advances and changes in the HR field today? 2016 has already been a year of many changes – from how we recruit and engage our employees to the technological advances that allow us to work anytime, anywhere. e future is here – and it is not science fiction! is issue of forwardHR is dedicated to the trends and changes that are impacting our profession – we hope that the information provides you with knowledge and suggestions to take you confidently into the future. Your Wisconsin SHRM State Council is serving as a When Work Works Community Partner. When Work Works is a SHRM initiative in partnership with the Families and Work Institute. At our state leadership conference in August, WI SHRM recognized the work sites in Wisconsin that were awarded the When Work Works award from SHRM in 2016. Congratulations to BDO USA, LLP with locations in Madison and Milwaukee; JACounter in New Richmond; KerberRose, S.C. in Shawano; Laughlin Constable in Milwaukee; and Palmer Johnson Power Systems in Sun Prairie. As in the past, WI SHRM will also be recognizing an organization with our annual Diversity and Inclusion award at our State Conference. ese two important awards serve to recognize the outstanding efforts of our organizations in Wisconsin that are moving into the future and making advances in the areas of diversity, inclusion, and workplace flexibility. Speaking of the future, the theme of our 30th annual WI SHRM State Conference Oct. 5-7 is Back to the Future: Celebrating 30 Years of WI SHRM. Conference co-chairs Kellie Dunn-Poggemann and Matt Bucher, along with the entire state conference planning committee, have been working extremely hard to provide attendees with programming that will add value to your role as an HR professional and positively impact your organization. is is our biggest WI SHRM event of the year and an excellent networking and education opportunity! In addition, we have some wonderful sponsors and exhibitors that offer solutions you need. We will once again be offering a conference app for you to download on your phone or tablet prior to the conference that will provide you with your schedule, program information, speaker info, and important conference updates. is is a conference that can't be missed! As I complete my two-year term as your WI SHRM State Director, it's hard to believe that the time went so fast! I don't have a time machine, but it feels like I got to the end of my term very quickly. I have thoroughly enjoyed my volunteer leader experience with WI SHRM and I truly appreciate all the wonderful human resource professionals in Wisconsin that have worked so hard to make our profession the best it can be. Volunteering is an excellent way to enhance your career, develop professional relationships, and add to your level of HR knowledge and competencies. Local chapter, state conference planning committee, and state council volunteers aren't simply donating their time and talent, they are reaping the benefits of being involved in a world- class organization, gaining access to leadership development and training, and interacting with a top- notch group of fellow volunteers. You can find out about opportunities to get involved by reaching out to local chapter presidents and state council volunteers. All of these contacts can be found at www. wishrm.org/volunteer. is has been an excellent year and I'm so proud to represent WI SHRM as State Council Director and work with an amazing group of volunteers! ank you so much. ■ DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE Letter from the 2015-6 Wisconsin SHRM State Council Director Katie Walk, Senior District Manager, Kelly Services Trends and Changes Celebrating 30 years of Wisconsin SHRM
