Instead of just a form rejection letter, are companies willing to help applicants address their deficiencies and improve their prospects? Like anyone else, job seekers would benefit greatly from honest feedback about how to change their approach to getting a good job. Our job centers have an array of services such as basic skills remediation, interviewing practice, employability skills training, computer literacy, communication skills and occupational training that could play a role in this process. • Finally, ask yourself who you're losing aer you hire. A recent Deloitte study showed that employee engagement is a vital factor in retaining talent. Your company has a "culture" whether you recognize it or not. Does that culture support, empower and challenge your employees? Turnover costs money — lots of it. One area company recently quoted me a figure of $8,700 per turnover — and that company had an annual turnover rate of more than 100 percent! What if some of that money was invested up front to retain workers who otherwise might walk away or be let go? Looking ahead, finding the talent we need to drive our companies is going to be a real challenge. Meeting that challenge will require innovation, change and resources. Good, productive employees will be worth that investment.
