Not only is our region being recognized nationally, but internationally. I spoke at the second annual Future Forum in Udine, Italy in early November about the Alliance's work in engaging youth and K-12 outreach. Italy is the second largest manufacturer in Europe. e Alliance's website was found by the event organizer by doing a Google search on manufacturing and K-12. He was impressed with the numerous initiatives the Alliance is involved in with K-12, including the Alliance's All Stars career magazine. During the last six years, people from all professions in manufacturing are spotlighted in the All Stars magazine, of which 20,000 copies are printed annually and are distributed to students, teachers and parents. e online version is on the Alliance's website. Students can view video clips of each All Star talking about their careers and why they love what they do. Plus, it gives the viewer the opportunity to see what a modern manufacturing plant is really like, which is a clean, high-tech, collaborative and fast- paced work environment. Who best to share with young people the value of manufacturing careers than the people that really do these careers. To view the current issue, go to: www.insightdigital.biz/i/220491. Recently, a new flag was planted at NWTC proudly symbolizing what we in the New North know very well, which is we are a "world class manufacturing center." e creation of the flag began eight years ago, when a manufacturer met with local officials and college presidents and discussed his frustration that our region didn't recognize the importance of manufacturing to our local economy. Paul Rauscher, president of EMT International, remarked that manufacturers in the New North are truly some of the best manufacturers in the world and we should have a flag in the ground that symbolizes our strength. From that meeting sprang up the formation of the NEW Manufacturing Alliance and now we truly are being recognized nationally and internationally as a world-class manufacturing center. ere still is a lot more to do in solving the skills shortage; however, we are well on our way of moving Northeast Wisconsin forward. F Ann Franz is strategic partnerships manager at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College and coordinator of the NEW Manufacturing Alliance, the North Coast Marine Manufacturing Alliance and the Green Bay Healthcare Alliance. Franz has worked throughout her career with manufacturers and educators. Word is getting out that New North technical colleges have increased enrollments by more than 200 percent in several degree fields including welding and machining since the NEW Manufacturing Alliance formed in 2006. 2339 W.
