is helping to develop the program

meet specific needs identified by local
employers, Panelli says.
"We want to train them for the
jobs that are available," he says.
"ere's a lot of involvement from
local employers from providing input
on the training to providing mentors."
Employers are in desperate need of
welders. By 2019, studies estimate the
nation will need 230,000 new welders,
Franco says.

openings for them," he says.
Panelli anticipates the program
will continue beyond its initial year as
businesses, educators and government
leaders see its success.
"I can see this program being a
model," he says. "We've had a lot of
success with it so far and it can be
duplicated by utilizing local resources
to help prospective workers get the life
skills they need as well as the technical
training in welding."
