I have been to several IMTS (International Manufacturing Technology Shows) in Chicago to see other machine tool builders and learn from them as well to get better. What kinds of technology do you use and interact with? At Fives Giddings & Lewis, we offer automated metal cutting machine tools, using PLC (programmable logic controller)- based automation, ProfiNet distributed I/O (input/output), digital servo control and advanced touchscreen user interfaces. In addition to commissioning these systems, I develop and maintain procedures and test data digitally on my laptop using Microsoft Office tools. What are the best benefits of working in manufacturing? I have found myself thinking more creatively while working in manufacturing for over 10 years. It is truly amazing how many manufacturing skills you take home and use while working on your own house projects. What are you most proud of in your manufac- turing career? For me, the proudest moment was knowing that our machines were being used to help make ventilators during the COVID pandemic — that literally saved so many lives. What kinds of technology do you use and interact with? I interact currently with SGVs (self-guided vehicles). SGVs are the future, and this platform is growing and will be beneficial for our paper industry in the future. What are the best benefits of working in manufacturing? The best benefits of working in manufacturing are financial and educational. I personally can say working for Georgia-Pacific has changed my lifestyle 180 degrees. It is a great company to work with, great insurance benefits, 401(k), and great compensation. What are you most proud of in your manufacturing career? I started from the bottom, and with my dedication I have grown in Georgia-Pacific. I am currently earning my automation engineering technology degree through Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, which I should get next year.
