Welcome to the 2013 Basic Needs
Giving Partnership Community Report
Throughout Northeast Wisconsin, the sugar maple tree – pictured on our cover – is
abundant. While it may take decades for one tree to flower, it can live for 300-400
years. Even when grown in relative darkness, its fall leaves turn brilliant shades of red
and gold, and it produces the best sap for maple syrup.
The Basic Needs Giving Partnership has much in common with that sugar maple.
Our partners are abundant. The darkness we face – poverty – may be daunting, but
it hasn't stopped us from growing, from raising $16.3 million for the U.S. Venture
Open Fund for Basic Needs endowment since we took root in 1986. While it may
take decades to end poverty, through our combined efforts we've seen many of our
residents blossom into self-sufficiency. These are truly lasting success stories from the
$11.3 million invested in basic needs grantmaking.
The Basic Needs Giving Partnership has been producing sweet results in Northeast
Wisconsin since 2007 when the J. J. Keller Foundation announced its intention to
match the annual grantmaking budget of the endowment, adding $4.3 million in
additional funds for grants and committing another $800,000 through 2014.
Read on to learn more about how this important effort is working to support people
from the ground up in Northeast Wisconsin. Whether you are a contributor to the
Basic Needs Giving Partnership, a partner in the U.S. Venture Open, a grant recipient,
or someone willing to make a difference to a person living in poverty, we thank you
for choosing to collaborate to address the root causes of poverty.
