"We believe in lifelong learning," said John Schwantes, director of member services at Johnsonville's operations facilities. "That means we're committed to helping all members develop their talents to reach their full potential." As the company continues to grow, we are looking for talented new members to add to our team. How does your company promote teamwork, and what is your role in a team within your company or your department? We promote teamwork very well. I try to act as an all-around role model for others. Are there any negative perceptions about manufacturing careers that you would like to change? The perception is that manufacturing jobs are dirty and not well-paying, but in reality, there are a lot of jobs that pay well and are good jobs to have. I like being able to focus on different things every day, and I like never knowing exactly what I'm going to be doing. Do you have a mentor? I've had several mentors that have done a great job of training me! Do you believe that your job is an exciting and engaging profession? The quick pace and endless opportunities of training is very engaging to many of us! We also use water meter test benches to ensure water usage stays within regulated limits on our products. How does your company promote teamwork, and what is your role in a team within your company or your department? I work on both cross- functional teams (with marketing, quality, supply chain, etc.) as well as my own engineering team. Teamwork is promoted with open brainstorm sessions on project issues, offsite team-building activities and team lunches every once in a while. Do you have a mentor? Yes. My mentor has encouraged me to be open to different opportunities. He is the reason I have become more of a future leader at the company, by providing advice and advocating for me at higher levels. Do you believe that your job is an exciting and engaging profession? It is very exciting to not only design a product, but to take it through all the steps needed to manufacture it. I thoroughly enjoy solving problems, and I get to do that every day here at Kohler.
