I
n my long career as a journalist, I've never had a boring day.
It's been a thrill, especially the past 10-plus years with Insight
Publications. Working side-by-side with my co-founder, Brian
Rasmussen, I'm proud of this business we have launched, nurtured
and grown. And I'm thankful to you, our readers, for believing in us.
In January, I announced I sold my shares of the company to
Brian. I feel confident he has everything he needs to keep this ship
sailing smoothly, and I'm sticking around until the end of June to
help ease the transition. By the time you read this, I'll be preparing
to close this chapter of my career and toasting the farewells.
What comes next? I've been advised by others who have decided
to step away from their business earlier than they imagined
that taking a break is a good idea. So, aer some family time,
ongoing community work, a few long-put-off personal projects
and a bit of travel, I'll come back to that question. Feeling
nostalgic, I wrote a blog on all this, which you can read on our
website, www.insightonbusiness.com, in the blog section.
It's a good feeling to know that as I prepare to leave, Insight
has already boosted the editorial department by hiring long-time
freelance writer and former Insight employee MaryBeth Matzek.
Besides her work to streamline the editing process, this month
she wrote a story about how videos created by New North Inc.
are being used by companies as they recruit talent (page 14). She
also did our Power Lunch feature about a popular café in Fond
du Lac (page 62).
Our cover story by Sean Johnson, "Plastic Passions" (page
22), takes you to the opposite end of our coverage region, to
Mountain, Oconto County. Nicolet Plastics was not only named
the 2017 Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce Manufacturer
of the Year in the small business category, it also is a past Insight
Innovation Award winner (2016).
is year's Insight Innovation Award winners were named at our
THINC! event in mid-May. I think you'll find the stories in this
issue on our five winners inspiring.
One more note: Insight has convened an entirely new editorial
advisory board (see page 4), charged with bringing fresh ideas to
our staff. Chances are you know some of them. Next month, you'll
see my name listed, as well. Feel free to get in touch with any one
of them, or with me. I look forward to keeping one toe in the
wake while Brian steers the boat!
