S p r i n g 2 0 1 8 • forwardHR | 5 "Good morning. Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is as follows: Should any of your I.M. Force be captured or killed, the secretary will disavow any knowledge of your existence. is tape will self-destruct in five seconds." Some of you may remember this weekly introduction to the popular television show or perhaps the movie "Mission Impossible." e difference between their mission and ours as HR professionals is that our mission is very possible, should we choose to accept it! e key to completing our HR mission is to develop a plan that aligns with and supports your organization's strategy and mission. To accomplish this, perhaps we need to ask ourselves these questions: • Are we educating ourselves to fully understand our organization's strategy? • Is our HR strategy realistic and supportive? • Have we developed the right tactics and goals to accomplish the strategy? And let's not forget about the role of our organization's culture and values. An organization's strategy is its culture, and its culture is its values. Our values are the heart of our culture and define us. Organizations need to spend more time focusing on their values or guiding principles, especially on the front end. SHRM's President and CEO Johnny C. Taylor, Jr. said it best at SHRM Live: Let's Rethink Sourcing the "Ideal" Candidate: "Who we hire, is who we are." In this edition of forwardHR, you will hear from our featured CEO, Paul Bartelt of e Vollrath Company, LLC, and our WI SHRM partners about their perspective on the importance of culture and strategy in achieving an organization's mission. ank you to our WI SHRM State Council, State Conference Planning committee and chapter volunteer leaders who served in 2017. I'm proud to share that two of our chapters were recipients of the SHRM Pinnacle Award: Dodge County SHRM and Metro Milwaukee SHRM. ese prestigious awards were presented at the November SHRM Volunteer Leaders' Summit in Washington, D.C. Congratulations to Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin, recipients of the WI SHRM Diversity, Inclusion and Workflex award presented at our state conference in October. In addition, I would like to welcome our 2018 WI SHRM council, chapter and state conference volunteers. You play an important role in achieving our mission. As part of WI SHRM, we have many great opportunities to grow our knowledge, network and volunteer. We started off our year in February with our Annual Day on the Hill in Madison, and in March with our HR Student Games and Conference at Western Technical College. ank you to our volunteer leaders, students and volunteers for making these events huge successes. In August, we will host our leadership conference, and in October, our state conference at the Kalahari Resort and Spa, Wisconsin Dells — a great way to network and grow personally and professionally. Speaking of growing, 2018 marks the third year of the SHRM certification. If you were SHRM certified in 2015, your first renewal is this year. I hope to see many of you in Chicago at the SHRM18 Annual Conference and Exposition. Please stay tuned to our News and Updates featured on our wishrm.org website for opportunities to connect in Chicago and to keep up to date on happenings. I'd love to hear your ideas, feedback, questions or suggestions. Best wishes in your mission and for a successful 2018! ■ Joanne Krueger, SHRM-CP, PHR is the Senior Talent Acquisition Consultant at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
