3 NOVO LIVE September 2017 September 2017 NOVO LIVE 3 Welcome to the first issue of NOVO Live, a publication com- mitted to empowering the peo- ple who consume healthcare. In other words, it's for everybody. When I think of health- care, I assume the fundamental thoughts in my head might be similar to yours. I view health- care through the prism of its effect on my family, my friends, the people I work with, me. When someone close to me is injured or gets sick, I want them to get better. Same goes for me. I was recently at a health- care gathering where the fol- lowing question was offered to the assembly: "If you had to describe the current state of healthcare in a single word, what would it be?" As anyone who knows me, I had zero intention of supply- ing an answer to the group. Public speaking is not my thing. I had my ideas but kept silent. Others jumped in to save me. "Impersonal!" shouted the first. "Fragmented!" exclaimed another. Then a chorus at the exact same moment: "EXPENSIVE!" In the discussion that followed all shared personal experiences that spoke to the truthfulness of their chosen adjectives. I had a few other choice words in my head: Caring. Inspirational. Life-changing. If I had possessed the willingness to express these thoughts out loud, would oth- ers in the room have shared stories illustrating such de- scriptions? My guess is yes. Despite squandering my opportunity, the discussion was not an exercise in futility. Quite the contrary. All the peo- ple in the room exhibited their passion about rethinking what is possible in healthcare. That same spirit is the catalyst for NOVO Live. So, as we move forward with this magazine, will we fo- cus on the healthcare challeng- es that currently stare each of us right in the face? Indeed. Will we address how healthcare is delivered and ways it could be improved for all? Certainly. Will we share stories about people touched by what is truly extraordinary in healthcare? Absolutely. We intend to travel each of these avenues, to find what is possible. We invite you to join us on the journey.
