Its innovative approach to efficiency in the world of intermodal marine containers has earned it an award in the category, Planet. What's a matchback? is is what occurs when a shipping container is delivered to an importer and then matched with an export booking inland. It minimizes the miles driven, increases container efficiency, and reduces costs and emissions. "ey reimagined an existing transportation sector and were able to figure out a challenge that has existed for 100-plus years," said one judge. Empty shipping containers cost the industry an estimated $20 billion annually. Recognizing that no stakeholder in the supply chain has all the information required to coordinate a matchback — for example, steamship lines only have visibility to one-third of their containers inland, and truckers only see the shipments they manage — MatchBack Systems in 2015 launched a unique optimization technology to automate this process on a neutral, collaborative portal for supply chain participants. MatchBack Systems brings a paradigm shi to the supply chain and creates a sustainable process; the company's goal is to make matchbacks a mainstream supply chain activity. It uses technology to automate and provide transparency to all stakeholders to reduce port-related congestion, improve efficiency and reduce costs. MatchBack Systems is described as an "intentional" company by CEO Todd Ericksrud. During a 2016 audit, the auditor noted the company's "overall commitment to the definition of repeatable processes" and commented that MatchBack Systems was "mature beyond normal expectations for a company of this size." In the past year, the company identified 38 million potential matchbacks and presented over 114,000 optimal matchbacks that average 117 miles saved per pair to its customers. is represents a potential 13.2 million heavy-duty truck miles. With an average fuel economy of a tractor trailer 5.5 miles per gallon, this equates to 2.4 million gallons of diesel saved, reducing emissions by 24,000 metric tons of CO2. at's equivalent to taking 5,270 cars off the road for a year.
