Unfortunately, the ease they offer also carries some risk. e American Academy of Pediatrics recently reported that between 2013 and 2014, more than 62,000 children had ingested laundry and dishwasher detergent packets. e exposure, in the most extreme cases, resulted in hospitalizations and even two deaths. Surveying the problem, Appleton-based Presto Products Co., devised a solution that helps brands take steps to keep kids safe. Presto's Child-Guard technology provides an extra layer of protection. Child-Guard has established a presence in the laundry aisle on popular products like Tide, Gain, Arm & Hammer, OxiClean and Hex branded products. When the packaging is closed properly, it's easy for adults to open but extremely difficult for young children. e company recently launched a website, child-guard.com, that teaches consumers how to use the product and provides household safety resources. "e response to Child-Guard has been strong, and the future looks bright," says Brad Hansen, president of Presto Products Specialty Division. "Child-Guard takes us into a new era of performance criteria for flexible packaging. It has opened the door for many possibilities for manufacturers of regulated and non- regulated products." — Jessica iel
