Jerry Murphy New North, Inc. Executive Director Dashboard dynamics: Making sense of metrics This mid-year report introduces elements of New North's dashboard of measurements. The dashboard is simply a quick view of metrics that reflect regional economic activity and the outcome of work, projects and initiatives that are regional in scope and that add value to business activity in the New North region. All of these are a matter of collaborative effort among educators, economic developers/ planners, chambers of commerce, municipal/state/tribal government, business and industry. They serve as foundation for new thinking – and doing – about how to move forward, to make choices, to engage limited resources and to maximize impact. celebrate brand affirming accomplishments and to encourage engagement among our investor firms and among our collaborating partners regarding strategies, tactics, opportunities and challenges within the context of regional marketing and economic development. I invite you to review the chart on pages 8 and 9 that provides an overview and progress report of the many initiatives undertaken by New North task groups and related organizations. The rest of this book is loaded with more charts and graphs, all We're introducing dashboard views to demonstrate trends, designed to help you get a better snapshot of how we're doing. You'll find metrics showing increases in the number of jobs, increases in quarterly wages and more loans distributed by the Small Business Association in our region (see page 10), to name a few. While trends are looking positive, the numbers paint a truthful picture and show that in some areas, we've got our work cut out for us. For example, the number of establishments in the region dropped slightly from the first quarter in 2007 through the third quarter of last year (see page 7). We share this economy and all have a vested interest in seeing it sustained, growing and evolving to meet cool new opportunities and to overcome obstacles.
