Drobeck says the conference filled a critical training need for nonprofits. "Many of us have much work to do around our missions," Drobeck wrote. "We cannot afford to have the amount of paid staff that is needed within our agencies, so volunteers assist us in carrying out our work. is training brings both nonprofits and businesses together and allows them to network and learn from each other." Communities with strong nonprofits typically have a strong business and economic development climate as well, Drobeck says. Enterprising Nonprofits also planned to hold two smaller, off- site events led by Vicki Clark to provide more ground-level, how- to information for attendees, says Mickey Noone, president of First Business Bank, a sponsor of the event along with Insight Publications. Noone says last year's event attracted about 335 nonprofit executive directors and volunteer coordinators, and also board members, which is critical as they don't oen experience the day-to-day challenges of nonprofits firsthand. e event is designed to help nonprofits to think and behave more like a business, Noone says. "What we noticed coming out of the Recession was a lot of nonprofits got punished pretty bad," Noone says. "So helping them think about a more sustainable revenue source, a sustainable business model, is really the focus." Enterprising Nonprofits led off a busy month of heavyweight conferences involving networking, innovation and community building. THINC!
