What's most interesting about your job? The people I work with are some of the most talented and fun people I've ever met. What kind of training prepared you with the necessary skills? I took every shop class they let me take in high school. I received a degree in machine tool and later a degree in mechanical design from NWTC. How did you decide on a career path? After a car accident left me disabled and no longer able to run machines, I picked up sheet metal layout and design. What advice would you give students who are undecided on a career field? Find something you have passion and skill for, then put everything you have into it. Also, people with disabilities can find jobs in manufacturing. Our industry is based on responsibly managing the paper supply chain," says John Davis, CEO of Great Northern Corporation. Today that responsibility is even more far reaching in its impact. Great Northern's business has doubled in the last five years and their investments in technology, process and people are focused on providing a more eco-friendly product and manufacturing environment for its customers, employees and the communities in which they work. Recent investments include a cooler corrugator that uses less energy, with a new glue machine that uses less starch and produces better board with less waste. SFI (Sustainable Forestry Initiative) and FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certifications ensure Great Northern's paper comes from sources that practice responsible forestry. The firm is committed to a Green by Design program that challenges their packaging and display designers to create innovative ways to help customers 'ship better' and 'sell more product' using fewer materials. "From lean initiatives focusing on waste to putting more energy efficient lighting in our operations, we take our responsibility seriously and make every effort to find more sustainable ways to run our business," says Davis. "Using fewer resources to produce more product offers cost-effective solutions for our customers and contributes to improving the environment." Privately-held, Great Northern Corporation is a designer and manufacturer of commercial and consumer packaging and point-of-sale displays. It employs 950 people with operations in seven states. The firm offers a range of employment opportunities including general laborers, skilled maintenance positions, press operators, packaging engineers, graphic artists and Lean/ISO/supply chain specialists.
