AS A PERSON WHOSE TEMPLES are long past graying, I can confidently state that I have never journeyed through a chapter that has as much uncertainly or opportunity as what we are experiencing today. Throughout the country, state and local governments are trying to balance budgets and decrease deficits. No matter what side of the political aisle you lean toward, it's clear that systems will be strained, diminished and in some cases eliminated. There may be a renewed call on United Ways and faith- based organizations to find ways to provide for basic needs and fund efficient, preventative programs to help those most in need in our community. Our own Brown County United Way is already feeling this. Our 2-1-1 information and referral center has seen a 57 percent increase in call volume from people needing basic services, especially rental and housing assistance. Prevention programs, such as our early-childhood program, the Community Partnership for Children, is stressed due to cuts in government funding. All of this adds up to you and me doing the best we can to raise resources locally during the United Way campaign this year. We look to increase our numbers from the $3.58 million that was raised last year. We encourage everyone who can to do just a little more to help make this happen. This year we have a fun incentive to help us move forward: Our friends at Broadway Automotive have donated a new Chevrolet Cruze to be given away to a lucky United Way contributor. All one needs to do is pledge $1 per pay period (a minimum of $26) or increase his or her annual giſt by that amount to be eligible. We really appreciate the good folks at Broadway for stepping up to help the Brown County United Way succeed. You can go to www.browncountyunitedway. org/win.htm to learn more. More importantly, United Way is uniquely positioned to mobilize the community to solve critical issues. It is volunteer-driven, has a legion of people doing community research and is supported by a small staff of caring professionals. The organization's goal is to mobilize the community for the common good. That responsibility is not taken lightly. Thank you for all you do, whether it is to give, advocate, or volunteer!
