w w w.in s i g h t o n m f g . c o m September 2014 • /INSIGHT ON MANUFACTURING | 35 PLANT|NEWS INAUGURAL SOLDERING GRADS POISED TO MEET TRAINING GAP A partnership between Kelly Services, the Department of Workforce Development, Plexus Corporation and Fox Valley Technical College has launched new careers for 10 students after four weeks of intense instruction in soldering to help Plexus address a training gap. Soldering joins multiple pieces of metal by using heat and a filler metal. The process is used in the plumbing, electronics and metalwork industries. The 10 students, who were referrals through Kelly Services in Appleton, completed the boot-camp style training experience in FVTC's new soldering lab in the college's Sustainable Technology Center on the Appleton campus. The initiative, funded through a Fast Forward grant by the Department of Workforce Development and administered by the Fox Valley Workforce Development EVENT|NEWS NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR AWARDS OF DISTINCTION A dvance, the economic development program of the Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce, is seeking nominations for its 15th annual Northeast Wisconsin Manufacturing Awards of Distinction event, presented by Baker Tilly. The Manufacturing Awards of Distinction will be held at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center on Wednesday, Nov. 12. The deadline for nominations is Wednesday, Oct. 1, and are available at www.titletown.org/MAOD. F AWARDS EVENT TO PRECEDE MANUFACTURING FIRST T he NEW Manufacturing Alliance is hosting the third annual "Excellence in Manufacturing & K-12 Partnerships Awards" dinner on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the KI Convention Center in Green Bay. The awards will spotlight best practices throughout Northeast Wisconsin and will recognize the upcoming 2015 All Stars and scholarship winners. Company winners in various categories include KI, Pioneer Metal Finishing, N.E.W. Plastics, Kondex Corp., Johnsonville Sausage and BPM. School and educator winners include Sheboygan South, Hortonville, Ashwaubenon, Plymouth and Kimberly high schools and Northeast Wisconsin Technical College. The program will be emceed by Lou Gentine of Sargento Foods and will include a silent/live auction. Last year's event raised $6,000 for college scholarships. Tickets are $50 for the awards dinner. The Manufacturing First Expo & Conference will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 22, also at the KI Convention Center, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event includes keynote speakers, breakout sessions, a networking reception and hundreds of booth exhibits. F APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE FOR FEBRUARY'S MOTY AWARDS T he Wisconsin Manufacturer of the Year (MOTY) awards program, sponsored by Baker Tilly, Michael Best & Friedrich and Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce, is accepting nominations through early December. Winners will be revealed at a black tie awards ceremony Thursday, Feb. 26 at The Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee. Self-nominations are encouraged. The awards ceremony is held in conjunction with the Manufacturing Matters!
