FINAL FRAME InsIde a vast, empty space, hospItal leaders are already seeing the future. ey envision that doctors and nurses will be able to view patients' medical records with them on a 39-inch screen, and that families will fit comfortably in each room as their loved ones prep for surgery. st. Mary's hospital in green Bay is building for that future. Construction began in late January on two projects, the Prevea Regional Orthopedics Center (shown is a sub-contractor cutting a metal stud for wall framing inside the center), and st. Mary's One Day services, an outpatient surgery unit that replaces the current outpatient nursing center. "Currently, the Prevea orthopedics, podiatry, rheumatology, therapy, and imaging is all in a 1959 portion of what used to be hospital space," says Jason helgeson, Prevea's executive director of musculoskeletal and therapy services. "It's a bit dated, even though there have been some remodeling and some updates. It's seen better days. so to remain competitive and to provide the best care for our patients, we thought it was time to make the move." e orthopedics center will move into 22,500 square feet of second-floor space in st. Mary's hospital. One Day services will be adjacent to that space, expanding to 10,000 square feet and increasing from 18 patient rooms to 26, each nearly double the size. "At the end of the day, the goal is to create a center of excellence in which a patient can pull up on shawano Avenue to valet parking, take the elevator one floor up, and they will be able to get anything musculoskeletal or bone- and joint-related addressed there," helgeson says. Both projects are expected to be finished by October. — Nikki Kallio Patiently growing
