Near the end of December, the Outagamie County Regional Airport had seen 12.5 inches of snow with 15 "snow events," says Katie Horan, finance and administration manager. This year's snow amount hasn't surpassed last year's by much, but the number of snowfalls is much more than usual. But any weather-related flight delays have been related to fog, she says. But just in case, the airport has a fleet of snow removal equipment like the one shown, manufactured by Oshkosh Corp. and M-B Corporation of Chilton. In October, the airport officially opened its Platinum Flight Center, one of the first Net Zero general aviation terminals in the country, Horan says. Net Zero means the building is highly energy efficient, constructed out of building materials that can pull energy from the sun, making it about 85 percent self-sufficient, Horan says. On the south side of the airport property, Fox Valley Technical College is under way on constructing its comprehensive Public Safety Training Center, slated for completion in Spring 2015. "It's going up very quickly," Horan says, adding that FVTC and the airport plan to partner on airport-related emergency training. So far, the pavement is laid, the building structures are up, there is a firing range and a "corpse farm" is ready for forensic science students. Airport officials, the college and the business community all hope the state-of-theart training facility will boost the region's profile – and number of visitors. — By Nikki Kallio 54 | Insight • J a n u a r y 2 014 w w w. i n s i g h t o n b u s i n e s s . c o m
