"What they were looking for ties in to what this program is offering – someone who can apply what they've learned and make that robot create a part," he says, adding that companies reported hiring employees with engineering technology bachelor's degrees but they were from out-ofstate. "We definitely fill a need with this program." The Leadership in Engineering Technology Program differs from a traditional engineering course such as the one UW-Platteville offers at UWFox Valley in Menasha. An engineering technician is more "hands on," working on the manufacturing floor with equipment to keep it going while an engineer may design that equipment, Koker says. In addition, it differs from the associate degrees offered in engineering at technical colleges since it provides higher level courses in math and the liberal arts. "With a bachelor's degree, the graduate may be able to move into more of a managerial role at some point in their career," he says. The program is also unique in how it can be accessed. Students can start it at any of the NEW ERA schools and then finish up the last two years at UW-Oshkosh or UW-Green Bay. UW-Oshkosh and UW-Green Bay each expect to hire several new faculty members to teach the new courses, Koker says. He hopes the first class of students to come through UWOshkosh will be at least 20 students, but predicts the program will grow over time. "We have been working on this program for two years and already have the curriculum developed. We took a look at what other schools that offered this do and based our program on that," Koker says. In addition, students who already have an associate degree in engineering from one of the area technical colleges will be able to enroll in the program while still working, Weber says.
