6 United Way Fox Cities | 2021 DATA TELLS A STORY Examine almost any indicator of well-being and you will find data that demonstrates communities of color, LGBTQA+ individuals, people with disabilities and other diverse populations are experiencing a disproportionate impact of, for example, economic, health and educational challenges. e 2020 Wisconsin ALICE Report found that nearly 62 percent of Black households and 46 percent of Hispanic households in Calumet, Outagamie and Winnebago counties fell below the ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) threshold, meaning they struggle to afford daily household expenses, compared to 32 percent of white households. Across the Fox Cities, sexual minorities — those whose sexual orientation, gender identity or sexual characteristics are different from the presumed majority of the population — are far more likely to report considering suicide and to attempt suicide than heterosexual youth. National data confirms trans youth are at highest risk of suicide; of the local data available in the Fox Cities LIFE Study, bisexual youth are at the highest risk. In the past year, almost half of bisexual youth have considered suicide and almost one in five attempted suicide. When comparing third grade reading proficiency by race/ ethnicity in the Fox Cities LIFE Study, the percentage of proficient white students is up to five times higher than those of other races/ethnicities. 40.0% 0.0% Bisexual Considered suicide Gay or Lesbian Heterosexual Fox Cities Region Youth Suicide-Related Behavior of High School Students by Sexual Orientation 2019 (online survey) Wisconsin Not Sure LGBT Heterosexual 10.0% 20.0% 30.0% Percentage of high school students Attempted Suicide LEARN MORE ABOUT United for ALICE, a collaboration of more than 648 United Way organizations in 21 states, including Wisconsin. unitedwayfoxcities.org/resources/alice LEARN MORE ABOUT the Fox Cities LIFE Study, a report produced by United Way Fox Cities and the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region to take a closer look at socioeconomic conditions in the area. foxcitieslifestudy.org Lalu Beré, United Way Fox Cities Tocqueville Giver, Emerging Leader, and Basic Needs & Self-Sufficiency Committee Volunteer
