FINAL FRAME Cultivating growth 54 | Insight • J u n e 2 013 P H OTO G R A P H co u rt e s y o f w w w. to u s c a n y. co m The new schreiber foods headquarters in downtown Green Bay is more than a construction project in progress – it also seems to be a catalyst for revitalization. The $70 million corporate headquarters development at Washington and Main streets has been "triggering or strengthening numerous other developments," says Jeff Mirkes, executive director of Downtown Green Bay. "It's amazing that it was just a year ago the blighted mall properties were coming down, and we've come this far already," says Mirkes, who expects the Schreiber project to be finished by May 2014. "It's a lot of fun, to see this development – and it's even more fun to see the catalytic impact it's having on other interests. It's a confidence-builder for other entrepreneurs." For example, Green Bay's Karma Group advertising agency is now moving 30 employees downtown, he says. T. Wall Enterprises of Middleton is proposing an 80to 90-unit apartment complex across the street from the Schreiber headquarters, and Dermond of Milwaukee is talking about a mixed-use retail and residential complex nearby. Additionally, the downtown also will see a $25 million redevelopment of the historic Hotel Northland. Schreiber, which makes cheeses and other dairy products such as yogurt for the grocery and food service industries, will house more than 600 employees in the completed headquarters. — Nikki Kallio w w w. i n s i g h t o n b u s i n e s s . c o m
