In each case, the organization developed new processes, whether it was figuring out how to decrease the amount of food waste in a college cafeteria or creating an online tool to help transportation and logistics companies communicate better. Here's a closer look at why each winner stood out: PEOPLE A nonprofit cooperative educational service agency based in Oshkosh, CESA 6 created the state's largest high school Youth Apprenticeship program. The program links high school students to businesses to help them learn more about an industry and a specific company. Some apprentices receive job offers after high school while others use that experience as they continue their education or look at other career paths. Serving more than 50 school districts, the CESA 6 program represents 20 percent of the entire state's enrollment in Youth Apprenticeships. PLANET Anyone who has been in a cafeteria knows there is a lot of food waste. St. Norbert College in De Pere decided to meet that challenge head on. The dining services staff changed how they planned their meals, and the college partnered with multiple sources to provide a place to send food waste, whether it was the biodigester at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh or using it as compost. Extra meals are sent to Freedom House, a local homeless shelter. Through the changes made, the college's dining facility creates less than one garbage bag full of food waste daily. PROCESS After working in the logistics industry for several years, Mark Hackl realized many truck trailers were returning empty, costing companies more money and resources. Hackl launched a new product and company, Lanehub Inc. in Green Bay, to address those problems. Lanehub has helped businesses save on shipping expenses and build partnerships between shippers and carriers. Earlier this year, Lanehub was acquired by Texas-based Transplace. The business will remain in Green Bay and, thanks to its connections to Transplace, be able to develop more innovations in the logistics industry. PRODUCT Appvion Operations has a long history of innovation. The Appleton company — then known as Appleton Coated Paper Co. — developed carbonless paper in 1953. As consumers seek more eco-friendly options, Appvion developed CleanSlate, a new point-of-sale receipt paper made with natural components. CleanSlate's carbon footprint is 17 to 31 percent lower when compared with traditional receipt paper. It can be used with current thermal printers, meaning no additional cost is required to begin using this product. SPECIAL AWARD — MARKETING When the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers became the Udder Tuggers for one day in June 2019, it was definitely fun. The team increased game attendance and its merchandise sales and, more importantly, drew attention to the state's dairy industry, which has struggled in recent years. With the coronavirus canceling all Rattlers games this season, Fox Cities Stadium and the team had to innovate again, developing different ways to bring people to the ballpark, whether it was for high school graduations, a drive-in movie or special events using the outdoor setting and the room to space out attendees, including CESA 6's annual meeting. If you missed the live event, you can still view the Insight Innovation Awards on our website at insightonbusiness.com/event/ insight-innovation-awards, where you can listen to Dickman's keynote and watch videos created for each of the award winners. Looking ahead to the 2021 Insight Innovation Awards, I believe we will receive many nominations about the groundbreaking steps organizations and businesses have taken to survive 2020.
