With nearly 200,000 acres of public land, it provides endless year-round recreational activities to enjoy. The high school underwent a $14.5 million renovation last year, and U.S. News & World Report ranked the school among the top 30 percent of high schools. In 2015, Florence was the second Wisconsin high school to add a Fab Lab where students learn the engineering problem-solving and soft skills needed for today's manufacturing positions. Assisted living facility A recent market study found a shortage of senior living options in this region. All facilities within a one-hour radius have a waiting list. The semi-retired local developer completed a similar project in Rockford, Ill., but needs an investor to help meet local banking equity requirements. The county incentives include TIF cash, a 4.5 percent BCPL loan and low-cost land already sold to the developer. The environmental study is complete and building plans are drafted. The 65-plus population grew 14.2 percent from 2010 to 2018 and will grow another 9.2 percent by 2023. The average median income is higher than other northern Wisconsin counties, which will improve success at this private-pay facility. Hotel study Florence County had the highest percent in tourism growth in Wisconsin last year at 16 percent. The only lodging available for visitors is a low-service GREATER OSHKOSH Development takes off near Oshkosh Corp.'s global headquarters site The Oshkosh Corp. global headquarters project is taking shape, and the surrounding area is seeing significant development. The City of Oshkosh will be developing a public park near the headquarters with a Riverwalk Trail that connects to the Tribal Heritage Trail. Casey's General Store has plans for a new convenience store along Oshkosh Avenue and North Westfield Street and Bank First National announced plans to open a new office along Interstate 41 and North Koeller Street. Additionally, developers are planning to develop an extended-stay hotel off Oshkosh Avenue with surrounding office and retail opportunities. Opportunity zones Oshkosh was federally approved for two opportunity zones, which are designated to spur development by creating tax incentives for businesses and individuals who invest in these areas. The designated zones include Census Tract 5 located in the central city and Census Tract 15, which includes much of the proposed Sawdust District south of Ninth Avenue. Census tracts 5 and 15 have been designated as opportunity zones in the City of Oshkosh. Florence County had the highest percent in tourism growth in Wisconsin last year at 16 percent.
